International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

August 9 is the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples as celebrated by the United Nations.

His Royal Majesty Ampun Sultan Hadji Muedzul-Lail Tan Kiram, Head of the Royal House of Sulu and Sultan of the Tausug people, warmly greets all fellow indigenous peoples’ across the globe a Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day!

Under the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples passed by the United Nations in 2007 and through Philippine Republic Act No. 8371 – the Indigenous People’s Rights Act of 1997, we the Tausug people of Sulu fully exercise our ancestral and customary rights in international law.

The Royal Sultanate of Sulu encourages all indigenous peoples and indigenous cultural communities around the world to work together and strengthen our common rights.
